A project seeking to rally public support and demand stronger regulatory reforms to promote transparency and reduce the high cost of political campaign financing has been launched.
The four-month project dubbed: “Citizens Awareness and Advocacy for Campaign Finance Reforms (CAACFiR) is being implemented in the Northern, North East and the Savannah Regions by Simba Ghana, an NGO, with funding support from the United States Agency for International Development under its Political Accountability Activity and led by the International Foundation for Electoral Systems.
Mr Abdul-Rahman Abdul-Mumin, Executive Director, Simba Ghana, speaking during the launch in Tamale, said the reported cases of vote buying in the just ended elections underscored the urgent need to advocate for transparency in the country’s democratic processes and address issues of vote buying, especially in subsequent elections in the country.
He explained that campaign finance played a critical role in shaping democratic processes, adding issues of unregulated and cloudy financing often tended to undermine the principles of fairness, accountability and equal participation in politics.
He said, “We believed that by amplifying the voices of the people, creating awareness and fostering collaboration among key stakeholders, we can bring about meaningful and sustainable reforms that will strengthen our democracy and create a fairer political landscape.”
Mr Tahiru Imoro, Tamale Metropolitan Director, National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), expressed the need for more awareness to promote patriotism among the citizenry to enable them embrace peace and tolerance even after elections.
He commended Simba Ghana for complementing the efforts of the NCCE to enhance citizens awareness and participation in the country’s electoral processes.
