The late Akua Donkor and Roman Fada (L)
Following the death of the founder and presidential candidate of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), Akua Donkor, on October 29, 2024, the party’s leadership has officially nominated Philip Kwabena Agyemang Appiah-Kubi, also known as Roman Fada, as the party’s new presidential candidate.
His nomination is in fulfillment of a directive by the Electoral Commission (EC) to the party to nominate a presidential candidate within ten days following the demise of the founder and leader of the party, Akua Donkor.
Philip Kwabena Agyemang Appiah-Kubi, a broadcast journalist, was the running mate of the Ghana Freedom Party until the demise of the party’s flagbearer.
A letter signed and issued by the General Secretary of the party, George Afful, on Monday, November 4, 2024, disclosed that the party has duly nominated its running mate, Philip Kwabena Agyemang Appiah-Kubi, to replace the late presidential candidate for the 2024 elections in line with EC’s request.
It was, however, unclear to the public when another letter resurfaced later on Tuesday, November 5, announcing the withdrawal of the party to contest the December 7 election.
The letter, issued and signed by one Richard Botchwey, who claimed to be the National Organiser of the GFP, in its letter to the EC said the party withdrew from the impending parliamentary and presidential race following a decision to posthumously honour the late founder and presidential candidate of the party, having consulted the family members of the late flagbearer.
“This decision, irrespective of how it may be, has been reached to posthumously honour the commitment and sacrifices by our late Founder and Presidential Candidate as the only person to send her candidature to the grave,” the statement read.
It however expressed commitment to participate in future elections organised by the EC.
But DAILY GUIDE confirmed from checks at the Electoral Commission that it has not received any such letter, as Philip Kwabena Agyemang Appiah-Kubi has fulfilled all the necessary requirements and duly filed his nominations as the law requires.
