Two Hundred and Thirty-Three teachers in the Okaikwei North Municipality in the Greater Accra Region have received Laptops from the Ghana Education Service (GES) under the government’s One Teacher –One Laptop programme.
The figure also includes some Non-Teaching Staff of the Ghana Education Service (GES).
The distribution exercise took place at the Municipal Education Directorate at Achimota. The visibly happy recipients underwent the validation processes which included the production of their Ghana Cards, after which their Laptops and Laptop Bags were handed over to them.
Some teachers who spoke to reporters were full of praise for the government and their union leaders for the conception and implementation of the programme, which they described as a timely intervention in the education space.
“The trend in education is driven purely by ICT, and devices such as computer laptops come in handy to enhance the teacher’s efforts,” one teacher said.
Pre-tertiary teachers in all five northern regions of the country are said to have benefitted from the scheme, according to the latest figures chanced on.
This development is a major step towards the completion of the nationwide Laptop computer distribution exercise.
The regions are Northern, North East, Savannah, Upper East and Upper West where a mop-up for primary school teachers, teachers on study leave and office staff of the Ghana Education Service (GES) who are yet to receive their laptops is underway.
Teaching and non-teaching staff of GES who are yet to receive their Laptop Computers under the Initiative are to generate their collection code by dialling short code *790*555#.
A statement by the manufacturing firm, in Accra on Wednesday urged all such teachers and non-teaching staff to contact ICT Coordinators in their respective Regions or Districts for assistance to enable them to receive their Laptops.
The statement explained that even though almost 96 per cent of all beneficiary teaching and non-teaching staff of GES have taken delivery of their Laptops, the company is stepping up its efforts to ensure all outstanding beneficiaries in all parts of the country take advantage of the initiative as it brings the nationwide distribution to closure.
The company says the creation of the collection shortcode is to facilitate the ease of distribution in the mop-up phase.
Teachers in the Ashanti, Greater Accra, North East, Upper West, Upper East, Northern and Savannah Regions are to activate their ShortCode *790*555# and contact their ICT Coordinators from Friday 26th July to collect their Laptops while Teachers and Non-Teaching Staff in the remaining 10 Regions are to go through the same process from the Wednesday 30th July 2024.
The government launched the One Teacher – One Laptop programme in September 2021 as part of the Teacher Professional Development (TPD) interventions to strategically influence teaching and learning outcomes in pre-tertiary educational institutions across the country.
Under the programme, every teacher in the public school from kindergarten to senior high school is to receive a computer laptop to aid them in teaching lessons preparation, research and learning.
The government pays 70 per cent of the cost of the laptop while each teacher bears the cost of the remaining 30 per cent through their Unions.
The laptops also allow teachers to easily access digital online training through National Teaching Council-approved modules – reducing the barriers to digital tools so that teaching remains in line with National Teachers Standards across the country.
