Chiefs and residents of Mepe in the Volta Region are living in fear following an announcement by the Volta River Authority (VRA) regarding another spillage of the Akosombo Dam.
The VRA, which has begun extensive community engagement ahead of the spillage, assures that this year’s spillage will be minimal. However, the chiefs remain concerned about the potential impact.
Togbe Korsi Nego IV, Manklalo of the Mepe Traditional Area, expressed his worries about the impending spillage. “This year, we have received more sad news about a possible controlled spillage.
“Last year [2023], I suggested that committees be established to investigate and plan for future spillages, but nothing was done. We heard an inter-ministerial committee was set up,” he said.
“We have been hoping that the inter-ministerial committee would come to us, the affected people, and listen to our challenges. But up to now, we have not met with the committee,” Togbe Korsi Nego IV added.
