A parliamentary candidate hopeful of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Odododiodioo constituency, Nii Kotey Ashie, has blamed the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the electoral violence often recorded in the area.
According to him, the NPP has been importing people from outside the constituency to cause trouble in the area during elections, tarnishing the image of the NDC.
The NDC is holding its parliamentary primary in the Odododiodioo constituency after the dismissal of the interlocutory injunction application filed by a disqualified candidate, Michael Nii Yarboi Anan, leading to the party’s initial indefinite postponement of the election.
Two candidates are seeking to represent the NDC in the Odododiodioo constituency following a decision by the Member of Parliament for the area, Nii Lante Vanderpuye, not to seek re-election.
Speaking to journalists during a visit to the forecourt of the Jamestown Police Station to cast his vote on Sunday, January 21, 2024, Nii Kotey Ashie assured a peaceful electoral exercise.
“The people of Odododiodoo, as I’ve always maintained, are peaceful and loving people. I’ve told you time and time again that those who come to foment trouble are imported from outside to come and cause trouble and then leave. Largely, we have seen NPP orchestrating such incidents, but we will not allow them; it will not happen.”
He also promised to address the issue of youth unemployment in the area when voted into power.
“I believe we need to revamp the employment prospects for our people. We need to ensure that our people are more employed. Many people who cannot secure a job due to lack of education need to be trained sufficiently to become employable, so we can help them find a job. Now, essentially, we have people who want to learn a trade due to their lack of educational capacity. They want to learn the trade, and we have to make sure we take them and train them. The most important thing is to empower them.”
