Ghana abstains in crucial UN Security Council vote to end Israel-Gaza war

The UN Security Council on Monday evening failed to adopt a resolution proposed by Russia that would have called for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, which has been ravaged by almost 10 days of fighting between Israel and Hamas militants.

The draft resolution was supported by four countries including; China, Gabon, Mozambique, Russia, and the United Arab Emirates with four countries including; France, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States voting against it.

Ghana was among the six countries that abstained from the crucial vote. The other abstentions include; Albania, Brazil, Ecuador, Malta, and Switzerland.

Members of the Security Council were divided on whether to condemn the Palestinian group, Hamas for its coordinated attacks on October 7 which has become a full-blown war in the Gaza Strip.

For the Council to adopt a resolution, the proposal must receive at least nine votes in favour, with none of its five permanent members opposing or casting a veto.

The draft was seeking to call for a humanitarian ceasefire, release of all hostages, aid access, and safe evacuation of civilians but all that is now in limbo as the draft failed to receive the required numbers.
