The Upper West Regional Minister, Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih has expressed grave concerns over the current spate of indiscipline and acts of immoral behaviours within the Wa community.
He decried that the situation has caused the town which happens to be the Upper West regional capital to lose its enviable accolade as one of the areas with high moral standards in the country.
It will be recalled that in May last year, two lovers were tied to a pole and flogged in the full glare of the public at the forecourt of the palace of the overlord of the Waala traditional area in Wa when a video of their sexual escapades went viral on social media.
Days before the incident, the Waala Traditional Council held a press conference and warned about the incidence of same-sex relationships in the area.
Currently, in the Wa town, a 35-year-old is standing trial at the Wa circuit court for allegedly defiling some 12 children.
Speaking as a guest speaker during the funeral rites of a renowned Islamic scholar, Osman Saeed in Wa on Sunday, August 27, Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih said such acts do not portray the right image of the town as a predominantly Muslim community.
“Everyone knows Wa as a serious Muslim community. Islam as we all know forbids immorality and all forms of indiscipline. Unfortunately, Wa has become an area where indiscipline and immoral behaviour are becoming the other of the day” he laments.
The minister charged parents and the leadership of the Muslim community to live up to their parental and moral-teaching responsibilities in other to instil moral uprightness in the current and future generations.
“Let us not forget of our individual and collective responsibilities in ensuring that we improve the current situation because that is the surest way we can have a bright future generation”
The regional minister also appealed to the Muslim community in Wa to pray for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party as they prepare for their internal elections and the 2024 polls.
He presented an amount of GH¢5000 for the establishment of a befitting library in honour of the late Islamic scholar, GH¢2000 to the bereaved family, and GH¢1000 to the leadership of the Muslim Community who were present at the funeral rites performance.
