KNUST invests $1.3m on studio equipment, GH¢17m on multimedia teaching 

The management of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) says as part of its efforts to improve quality education, it has invested more in online learning.

In line with this, the University has commissioned state-of-the-art studios and facilities aimed at giving e-learning a big boost.

Speaking to the media after commissioning and inspecting the various facilities, the Pro-Vice Chancellor of KNUST, Prof. Ellis Owusu-Dabo revealed that so far, 1.3 million dollars has been invested in the studio equipment while 17 million Ghana cedis has been invested in multimedia teaching apparatus.

“This pandemic that many think is gone has left in its wake one big lesson; we cannot always go to our laboratories, we cannot always go to our studios, neither can we always go to the classrooms. So it is important that wherever we are, whether we are in our bedrooms, or living rooms, we have to focus on the opportunities and flexibility of teaching and learning. KNUST has invested a substantial amount of money through the efforts of the vice chancellor, Prof. Mrs. Rita Akosua Dickson. We’ve already paid 1.3 million United States dollars for these studios and facilities that you see. We’ve also invested 17 million Ghana cedis in multimedia teaching apparatus within the classrooms. Very soon you will see this in all the classrooms around this campus and the other campuses that we do have”.

In a speech read by the Pro-Vice chancellor on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson, she noted that the commissioning of the facilities is part of the institution’s efforts in promoting digital education.

“We will commission this facility to serve as the symbol of our continued commitment to digital education. I believe this infrastructure is just what we need to compete with the rest of the world in this era of digital Education. I am sure we have set ourselves on the path of success and nothing can stop us now”.

The director of the KNUST e-learning centre, Prof. Eric Appau Asante stated that “the forum will provide training to major stakeholders like academics, trainers and policymakers to ensure the integrity and standard of the Ghanaian e-learning space”.

He added that the initiative known as “The E-learning Ghana Forum will also seek to highlight KNUST’s full online programs and short courses by emphasizing its benefits for the Ghanaian educational sector and our partners”.

He further noted that it will serve as a platform for annual stakeholders dialogue or meetings, international collaborations, and advocacy platform where higher educational institutions or tertiary institutions converge to promote common interest and intervarsity dialogue.

Authorities at KNUST are hopeful that their latest investment in e-learning has given teaching and learning in the school a big boost and will adequately serve all its branches scattered across Ghana’s 16 regions.

They also believe it will help bring learning to the doorstep of individuals and will make learning very accessible in a flexible and innovative way.
