Beloved for its mix of serene beach and countryside aura, Kokrobite is geographically only 25km away from Accra, but feels like a world away. It’s such an ideal place to spend a few days away from the bustle of big city life.
The beach is anchored by an active strip that is home to several boutique accommodation offerings and a thriving tropical beach scene with lots of eateries where one can relax while soaking in the views of this charming seaside. Here, you’ll often see people surfing in the ocean, which is always a thrill to watch. Kokrobite is reputed to be the host beach for an international surfing festival!
I’m here at the Serenity Residences and Spa; and when I say this is an ultimate luxury staycation destination, believe me! As their tag line goes, ‘this is not your average beach house’.
It is a most tranquil place to get away to. Just an hour’s drive from the capital, this property’s edge is metres away from the ocean, with a three-storey apartment complex of varying configurations of up to three-room apartments overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
There’s an outdoor swimming pool in a courtyard, with hammocks in the private garden and an integrated barbecue grill as well as outdoor shower. The grounds are spacious enough to hold moderately populated events.
They set up bonfires and all kinds of outdoor activities; while indoors, up on the rooftop, the wellness centre is a convenient amenity where a Jacuzzi that is very well-insulated for privacy sits waiting exclusively for you.
With Spanish tiles throughout the property, the facility has 6 fully-furnished 3-bedroom ensuite villas offering bed and breakfast, and has an open plan cute living area flowing into a fabulously equipped integrated kitchen with appliances and crockery – my favourite space in the house! There are private chefs available to rank up the kitchen for your pleasure if you require; and you can even call in a private masseuse to help you relax you, when you want to be ‘kneaded’!
Seriously, you cannot come here and not unwind. Get daily massages, lounge by the pool, stay indoors, be a couch potato, read up or binge on Netflix!
Getting to Kokrobite is pretty easy too, but for the traffic bottleneck that holds up around the defunct Weija toll booths.
Using the Accra-Cape Coast Road stretch of the N1, make a right turn onto the Tuba-Kokrobite Road having turned left heading back in the direction of Accra after passing the toll booths. You’ll come to a roundabout; use the third exit and follow the signs to Kokrobite township. Turn right after the lorry station and follow on to Serenity Residences and Spa.
Walking barefoot on the shore and digging into the sand is therapy enough. Going up the distance past the busier part of the beach is exciting.
In naturally beautiful surroundings, you must anticipate sunsets which often tend to cast mesmerising hues over the ocean, giving off a quixotic vibe. Get yourself a cocktail and slide into the heated Jacuzzi for those moments and chill.
