The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) Foundation has handed over a six-unit classroom block to Atobiase community, a farming town in the Wassa East district of the Western Region.
Ernestina Winful, District Director of Education, speaking at a brief handing over ceremony expressed gratitude to the GNPC Foundation, saying: “You are helping teaching and learning to take place effectively and efficiently, and this will encourage the students to take their studies seriously”.
On students’ performance in the area, she said BECE results over the past few years have been excellent. “We organise BECE clinics and mock National Standardised Tests, among others, to prepare them for the BECE; that’s why they always excel.”
She added the new facility will further enhance teaching and learning, and ultimately translate to better academic performances in the future.
She mentioned that there are existing structures within the district which have not been maintained for a long time, and hence appealed for support. She also pledged to ensure regular maintenance of the new structure.
Dr. Dominic Kwesi Eduah, Executive Director of GNPC Foundation, said all the metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies in the Western Region have benefitted from projects in terms of sanitary facilities, artisanal training, dormitories, boreholes, classroom blocks, Astro Turf, dormitories as well as scholarship programmes.
He explained that under the foundation’s Economic Empowerment Programme, beneficiaries are supported with start-up tools after completing training. “GNPC Foundation’s signature has been dotted in all MMDAs of the region,” he added.
The Chief of Atobiase, Nana Kweku Bukro II, on his part expressed appreciation to the GNPC Foundation and appealed for the construction of a Senior High School (SHS) in the district.
“I will provide you with a vast land for the construction of a SHS, so we can have children in the district also attending school here,” he added.
