The Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council is set to petition the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, on Friday, March 7, 2025, over alleged derogatory comments made against the late Dr. J.B Danquah on the floor of Parliament.
Osabarima Okogyeaman Apagya Fori IV, Kyebi Apapamuhene and warlord of the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area, confirmed to Citi News that the Council will submit its petition to the Speaker today, Friday, March 7.
“We are here to show our concern to the Speaker that someone has insulted our beloved JB Danquah despite his contributions to the nation. He doesn’t deserve that. We have poured libation and tomorrow [Friday, March 7], we will send our petition.” he said after pouring libation at JB Danquah’s grave in Kyebi on March 6.
The Traditional Council wants the comment withdrawn.
According to the council, the comment was allegedly made by MP for Tamale Central, Murtala Mohammed who they say described Dr JB Danquah as a traitor and a CIA operative. The Council says they deem the comment offensive and unfortunate, given J.B Danquah’s role in Ghana’s independence struggle.
The youth of Okyeman have also pledged their support to the traditional council, and have called on the MP to render apology and retract the statement.
“We, the youth of Okyeman, are displeased with the comments. We are asking Hon. Murtala Mohammed to retract the derogatory remark and apologize to the people of Akyem Abuakwa, JB Danquah’s family, and the nation as a whole,” they stated.
On Tuesday, March 4 when the Speaker directed probe into the ‘Daughter of a Murderer comment’ against Dr. Zanetor Agyemang Rawlings, Frank Annoh-Dompreh raised this issue of similar derogatory remarks made against J. B. Danquah.
However, the Volta Caucus which had petitioned the Speaker for a probe into the comment against Dr. Zanetor and was in the chamber was unpleased over attempts to equalise the issues.
