A planned march to impress upon the Electoral Commission, to declare the parliamentary results of Techiman South Constituency has been cancelled, due to police unavailability.
This follows the group demand for the declaration of the results of the Techiman South results which was halted due to alleged misconduct by some NDC supporters at the divisional police command where the collation was taking place.
They were said to have burnt pink sheets and ballot papers, shot and destroyed EC materials, and held journalists hostage. This compelled the incumbent MP to hide in a washroom.
Scores of people in Techiman were expected to join the peaceful walk but a last-minute cancellation disappointed many residents.
Convener of the Concerned Youth of Techiman, Adusei Poku during a media briefing on Wednesday, said “Recently, we held a meeting with the Regional Police Command to discuss our security needs for the demonstration. During this meeting, they expressed their concerns regarding the availability of adequate security personnel, particularly due to the heightened demands for public safety during the festive season.”
It is not clear when the protest will be held.
Parliamentary results of Techiman South are currently in contention between the NPP and NDC, with both claiming victory.
The electoral Commission intends to re-collate the results to bring finality to the impasse, something, the opposition party has vehemently, opposed.
