Chelsea have reached an agreement with 18-year-old defender Josh Acheampong on a contract extension until 2029.
Acheampong, one of Chelsea’s bright youth prospects, joined the club’s Under-8 at a tender age and has since made progress through the youth ranks.
On December 12, Acheampong was rewarded for his hard work and consistency showcased in the youth setup when he was handed a first-team start against Astana in the Conference League.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has long been an admirer of the defender.
Reacting to his contract extension in his pre-Europa Conference League presser against Shamrock Rovers, Enzo Maresca said: “I am very, very happy. With Josh, it has been quite clear; we had him in pre-season, and I didn’t know him personally, but within two or three days, he really impressed me.”
The club was long in talks with the youngster, who was initially frozen out of the team after talks stalled.
With Reece James being ravaged by injury and Wesley Fofana crocked as well, the young defender, who is eligible to feature for Ghana and England due to his roots, will hope his versatility of being able to play in the right-back and center-back roles will see him feature consistently for the Blues.
