Initial ballot papers distributed for the Eastern Region were burned on December 2 following the Electoral Commission’s announcement of defaced ballot papers found in the wrong hands.
All ballots from the 33 constituencies in the region were recalled for the burning, while the special voting in the region was rescheduled from December 2 to 5.
The Electoral Commission’s Eastern Regional Director, John Appiah Baffoe, led the stakeholders to oversee the exercise.
Earlier, Zoomlion was invited to use its truck to collect the ballot papers from the Eastern Regional Police Quarters in Galloway. However, a disagreement among political parties led to a new agreement to have all vehicles transport the ballots to the dumping site at Akwadum in the New Juaben North Municipality.
The ballots from all constituencies were offloaded with assistance from Zoomlion and under the supervision of personnel from the Police Service.
Representatives from both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) were present throughout the process.
Mr Baffoe stated that they are awaiting the new batch of ballot papers for distribution ahead of Thursday’s scheduled Special Voting exercise for the Eastern region.
“We have begun the process to ensure the Eastern Region has a credible electoral process. All political parties were here for the burning, and I am waiting for the new ballot papers for distribution,” he said.
The representatives from the political parties were pleased with the process.
“I am pleased with the burning process. I only have a concern with the information flow from the EC. We were not communicated to properly on the exercise today,” NDC Regional Secretary, Baba Jamal Konney pointed out.
