The United Press for Development Network (UPDN) has expressed grave concern over a recent directive by the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana regarding media accreditation for the upcoming 2024 elections.
The memo initially proposed a drastic limitation on the number of journalists allowed access to constituency and regional collation centres, citing space constraints. After consultations with key media associations, such as the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA), the number of accredited journalists was increased from 3,308 to 4,500. However, UPDN argues that this adjustment is insufficient and fails to address the core issue of restricting media coverage during the elections.
UPDN has categorically condemned the decision, stating that it is undemocratic and undermines the principles of transparency, accountability, and fairness in the electoral process. The network emphasizes that elections are public events, and limiting media coverage prevents the electorate from receiving timely and accurate information, which is crucial for informed voting.
Further, UPDN highlights the threat this capping poses to press freedom, a fundamental right enshrined in Ghana’s Constitution. “The role of the media in ensuring credible elections cannot be overstated. Any attempt to limit the number of journalists at collation centres stifles press freedom,” a statement from UPDN read.
The UPDN also expressed concerns that restricting media access to key election areas could lead to misinformation and undermine the integrity of the electoral process. Full media access, they argue, is essential to promoting public trust and ensuring transparency.
In solidarity with the GJA, UPDN has called on stakeholders to demand the immediate reversal of the directive. If the EC fails to address the concerns, the group has warned of possible legal action to safeguard media rights and uphold the transparency of the election process.
As the December 7, 2024, elections approach, the media’s role in providing fair, accurate, and timely coverage remains critical to maintaining the integrity of Ghana’s democratic system.
