Ghanaian coach Kwesi Appiah has inspired Sudan to their highest FIFA ranking in the last decade.
This follows their stunning displays against Ghana in October’s 2025 Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, which saw Sudan earn four out of the available six points against the Black Stars.
After a goalless draw in the first leg at the Accra Sports Stadium on October 10, Sudan were at their optimum best five days later as they beat Ghana 2-0 to move a step closer to securing qualification for the AFCON, leaving the Black Stars on the verge of missing out on the tournament for the first time since 2004.
The victories over Ghana, coupled with the brilliance the team has showcased since Appiah’s appointment in September 2023, winning nine games, drawing five, and losing four times, has seen Sudan make a giant leap in the FIFA rankings.
Sudan’s rise in October’s FIFA rankings sees the Falcons of Jediane move 10 places up the global ladder, which is an improvement on September’s 120 rank.
Sudan’s new global rank (110) is the highest the Falcons of Jediane have placed since October 1, 2015, where they placed 84th in the world and 22nd in Africa.
In Africa, Sudan are ranked 26th, which is also an improvement on their 31st rank from last month. With two more games to climax the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, Sudan needs to pick up a point from their remaining two games to secure qualification to the continental showpiece; a first since 2021.
The former Black Stars coach has been nominated for the 2024 CAF Awards for Men’s Coach of the Year.
