Labour Consultant, Austin Gamey, has indicated that organised labour failed Ghanaians to call off their planned strike over illegal small-scale mining (Galamsey) menace.
He indicated that Organized labour was the only potent force left to have compelled President Akufo-Addo to take steps against galamsey but they have disappointed Ghanaians.
Speaking on the Key Points on TV3 Saturday October 12, he said “Organized labour has failed us. They must apologize to themselves and all of us for suspending the intended strike.”
He stressed, “I felt disappointed and I expressed my revulsion about this matter.”
The decision by organised labour to suspended its strike on October 10 was taken after they expressed satisfaction with government’s measures rolled out so far to address the galamsey menace.
Mr Ansah was emphatic that government’s initiatives to address the strike are heartwarming. He said the strike has therefore been suspended.
“Government working with the judiciary has already established 14 courts, seven high courts and seven circuit courts to handle illegal mining cases.”
“In Collaboration with Organised Labour and other stakeholders to fight illegal mining, government has asked Organised Labour to nominate representatives to be part of the stakeholders to fight illegal mining in the country. Government supports Organised Labour for all presidential candidates to sign a pact committee to a fight against illegal mining. Comrades Organised Labour has therefore decided to suspend the intended strike action, we are calling all workers to report to work on 10th of October 2024 and beyond,” he declared.
Mr Ansah said Organised labour will keenly monitor the implementation of the measures which government has put in place, “and government will hear from us if it fails to do the needful”.
The President of the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) Ghana, King Ali Awudu entreated government not to renege on its promise to fight the galamsey.
“The issue of galamsey is a worry to everybody. However, going on strike is not what Organised Labour wants to do, what we want to tell government is that the road map that has been agreed should be implemented to the fullest,” he urged.
The President of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, Perpetual Ofori Ampofo expressed concern about other union members who felt not being allowed to speak in the meeting held before the suspension of the intended strike.
“I cannot speak for everybody. We all came to this meeting at 2 o’clock, and we stayed through the meeting. We made submissions, there were responses we got to a point where we had to call in the media. So if people still have difficulties, I think they should have expressed it in the meeting,” she
