The Christian Council of Ghana has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to broader stakeholder consultations and ensure transparency in its processes ahead of the 2024 December elections.
In a statement to the EC and the opposition NDC, the Council said this will “cultivate confidence and trust” in the Commission for the elections.
The Council also urged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and other political parties to exercise restraints as the EC address the issues raised by the NDC.
The Group encouraged the leaders of the NDC to be open to dialogue and “avoid any actions that may seem to be Inciting their large followers”.
The eminent group of religious leaders further urged all stakeholders to be tolerant, use dialogue at all times, and work in the supreme interest of the good people of Ghana.
The Council wants an outmost fairness and transparency in all processes leading to, during and after the elections.
“We strongly encourage professionalism and neutrality on the part of our security agencies and the personnel who will be involved in the election processes,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, the NDC protested across all 16 regions on Tuesday, September 17 to register their displeasure with the EC’s refusal to allow for a forensic audit of the voters’ register.
The party petitioned all the regional offices of the Commission with their grievances and presented a petition to Parliament as well. While receiving the petition on behalf of the Speaker of Parliament, the Majority Leader Afenyo-Markin said the House will have to look into the concerns of the NDC to ensure a free and fair elections.
The NDC has also announced that the party “will not sleep” after the protest on Tuesday but will extend the demonstration to all district and constituency offices of the EC if no action is taken on their petition.
