Lapaz-toyata hitmaker and celebrated highlife artiste Adjei Yeboah Maradona widely known as GURU has won the votes of students of the University of Ghana to lead the Students’ Representative Council (SRC).
Provisional results by the Electoral Commission (EC) show Mr. Yeboah polled an overwhelming 9,455 votes representing 50.7% of the total valid votes cast at the end of the student elections on Wednesday, September 18, 2024.
His closest contender, Emmanuel Owusu Amponsah polled a paltry 6, 645 representing 35.8%.
The other contenders in the Presidential race Emmanuel Mensah, Noah Nii Afotey and Blessing Martey all gathered 378, 1,518 and 458 votes respectively.
The elections which took place despite an interlocutory injunction from the Adenta Circuit Court saw a total of 18, 659 votes cast out of an expected 59, 629 votes.
For the General Secretary position a run off is expected between Deborah Febiri-Damoah and Lorinda Owie Teyehugmeh after they both garnered 5, 642 votes representing 30.2% and 8,713 votes making a percentage of 46.7% respectively.
Constance Faith Duodu pulled 3, 705 of the total valid votes representing 19.9%. The UGSRC Constitution demands a candidate to win by a 50% 1 vote.
On the Treasure ticket, Roland Oppong and Jonathan Kankam will go head-to-head in another run-off after both failed to meet the 50% 1 thresholds as mandated.
At the end of the poll, Roland Oppong pulled 9,092 votes representing 48.7% while Jonathan Kankam and Micheal Arhin Nash both secured 8,120 votes representing 43.5% and 1,026 votes representing 5.5%
The Electoral Commission is yet to schedule a date for the run-off.
