The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has mounted a strong defense for its call on Ghanaians to join in demanding an electoral roll that will “reflect their true will” after voting closes on December 7.
The party insists that the current voter register, rather than “boost our confidence” in the Electoral Commission’s processes and promote free, fair, and transparent elections, is “sadly riddled with a lot” of errors.
Addressing a press conference on Monday, September 16, the Western Region Secretary of the party, Joseph Nelson, outlined a series of errors that the “eagle eyes” of members of the National Democratic Congress have uncovered.
“243,540 previous transfers were illegally added to the 2024 transfers, including repeated instances of illegally transferred names.”
He further stated, “Over 15,000 unidentified voter transfer records, due to fake voter registrations, have been detected,” and questioned where these voters were originally registered.
“3,957 voters appeared in the 2023 register but were deleted from the 2024 provisional register due to transfers.”
Mr. Nelson also claimed that “2,094 voters” had transferred to different polling stations but were not found in the Absentee Voter List, as required by law.
He alleged that there are “corrupt files” that do not display the names and photos of registered voters, raising concerns about “what if this happens on election day?”
The Regional Secretary said that the NDC, being a “very responsible” political party, had drawn the Electoral Commission’s attention to these issues and requested a meeting to seek an amicable solution, but “unsurprisingly” the Jean Mensa-led administration has “flatly refused.”
According to him, it is on the “basis of the foregoing” that the party is calling on every Ghanaian to join in their “peaceful, Enough is Enough” demonstration tomorrow.
