Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has emphasised the need for his team to step up their game following two disappointing results in the opening fixtures of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
Ghana’s 24-year unbeaten home record at the Baba Yara Stadium was broken after a 1-0 loss to Angola in Kumasi on Thursday. Hoping to bounce back, the Black Stars could only manage a 1-1 draw against Niger, failing to hold onto a first-half lead in their second match.
Reacting to the team’s performance, Otto Addo admitted that his players have not been up to the expected standard and stressed the urgency to improve ahead of the next matches.
“So it’s still possible, but we have to improve, we have to improve much. We have to use our chances and also defend better. The goals we conceded were too cheap, and we need to learn from this. This is even more than a wake-up call,” Addo said.
Ghana will face Sudan in a doubleheader in October for the third and fourth matches of the qualifiers.
Currently, Angola leads Group F with six points, followed by Sudan with three points, while Ghana and Niger sit third and fourth with one point each.
