Venezuela were mauled 4-0 by Nigeria on Friday in a lopsided encounter at the Estadio Olimpico Pascual Guerrero in the ongoing U-20 Women’s World Cup as Nigeria secured passage to the last 16.
Amina Bello’s strike after 16 minutes set the tone for the Falconets, with Chiamaka Okwuchukwu’s goal in the 28th minute giving Nigeria a cushion.
Sabastine Flourish made no mistake on the stroke of halftime with a well-taken goal to take her tournament tally to two and extend Nigeria’s advantage to three.
The result was put beyond Venezuela’s reach when Joy Igbokwe steadied herself to finish for the Falconets and book their tickets to the next round.
Nigeria joins Cameroon as the only African side to make the last 16 thus far, with Morocco bowing out of the competition after losing all group games.
Cameroon and Nigeria’s involvement in the one-eight stage is the first time two African sides have made their way to the knockout phase of the competition, with Ghana’s negative goal difference being a disadvantage for them in securing qualification – despite having a final group game against New Zealand on Sunday.
