Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou expressed concerns about the club’s “fragile” foundations following their defeat to Manchester City.
The home defeat on Tuesday ended their hopes of securing Champions League football for next season as the highest they could finish in fifth place.
Spurs needed a win against City to keep their chances of a top-four finish alive, but they lost 2-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Postecoglou emphasised the fragility both inside and outside the club, stating that the last 48 hours had revealed this reality to him.
“The foundations are really fragile,” the Australian said. “The last 48 hours have shown me that.
“It’s inside the club, outside the club. Outside, inside, everywhere. It’s been an interesting exercise. It’s just my observations, mate.”

In the lead-up to the match, Postecoglou was puzzled by some Spurs fans’ willingness to see their team lose in order to harm Arsenal’s title chances. The atmosphere during the game was notably subdued, with chants directed towards Arsenal despite Spurs’ efforts to challenge City.

Postecoglou acknowledged the influence of the crowd on the players, stating that the energy from the supporters had contributed to late victories in previous games. However, he expressed disinterest in fans’ priorities, emphasising his focus on winning and building a successful team.
“I want to be successful at this football club, it’s why I was brought in. So what other people, how they want to feel, and what their priorities are, are of zero interest to me.
“I know what’s important to build a winning team – that’s what I need to concentrate on.”
The manager’s frustration was evident in his post-match interviews, where he gave brief responses before elaborating on his criticism in a news conference.
He reiterated his commitment to achieving success at Tottenham, emphasising the importance of concentrating on building a winning team.
Despite the setback against City, Postecoglou remains determined to address the club’s challenges and lead Spurs to success in the future.
