My parents were initially not so supportive of my dancing career because of the perception they had about dancers –  Afronitaaa

In a world where pursuing one’s passion can be met with scepticism, DWP Academy member and International choreographer, Afronitaaa revealed that she faced initial challenges in gaining her parents’ approval for her chosen career path.

However, through determination, dedication, and the power of communication, Afronitaa successfully transformed her parents’ perceptions and won their unwavering support for her dreams.

The 18-year-old international dancer in an interview with Delores Frimpong-Manso on the Delay Show disclosed that her passion for dance was evident from an early age, but her parents harbored certain misconceptions about the art form.

“Okay, initially they were not so supportive because parents have some kind of perception that dancers are street kids and all that especially back in the day,” she said.

Concerned about the potential impact on her education, Afronitaaa said her parents were initially hesitant to endorse dance aspirations.

“With my parents, their concern was if I go into this dance thing what will become of my academics,” she pointed out

According to the award-winning dance instructor, after she realized the obstacles ahead, she embarked on a mission to prove her parents wrong by taking her academics seriously while combining dance.

“So when I realised that was what I needed to convince them. I was like I’ll do everything to make my grades the best,” she revealed.

As Afronitaaa’s dance career flourished, her academic achievements also shone brightly, creating a balance that her parents ultimately recognized and appreciated.

Witnessing their daughter’s growth, dedication, and talent, their hearts softened, and they evolved from sceptics to staunch supporters.

“So when they saw that the dance is going on well and the books too are secured then they were like okay calm so they support me. My parents are very very supportive people,” Afronitaaa proudly declared.

Today, Afronitaaa stands as a role model for aspiring dancers and young individuals pursuing their passions

After completing her high school education at Wesley Girls High School in 2021, Afronitaa demonstrated her commitment to her academic pursuits by securing top grades and landing herself at the University of Ghana, where she continues her academic journey.
