Former Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Otiko Afisa Djaba has told the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) which she belongs to, to take prompt actions in dealing with the concerns of the caterers of the National School Feeding programme.
She said where the government cannot meet the demands of the caterers, the caterers should be met and be talked to.
Some angry school feeding caterers recently staged a protest against the government in Kumasi and stormed the office of the Ashanti Region Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah, in all-red attires to demand increment and payment of their “three terms’ arrears”.
They had threatened to stop cooking for the beneficiary children until the government heeds to their demand for payment of their three terms’ arrears and increment in the feeding grant per child from the current 97pesewas.
Speaking on Ghana Television on Tuesday May 2, Madam Otiko who is also a former National Women’s Organiser of the NPP told the government to “Sit up, it is not about breaking the 8, that is why you have been elected. I am very proud of my party but they must sit up.
“I am very angry with my government. That issues like this, in terms of the caterers, prompt action is not being taken,” she said.
“When 1 million people give their votes to you, you must do the right thing by them. This is not about politics, this is about the development of the people, with the people. Giving them the necessary information.
“Where you cannot meet them, talk to them. They are human beings; they will understand because the NPP is a listening government. These are serious times and we need serious decisions to be taken.”
“Food prices are like that all over the world, it’s not only Ghana but why are you a leader? You are a leader to solve the problems,” she added.
