Court grants bail to 26 arrested NDC protesters
The Adjaben District Court has granted bail to protesters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) arrested during Thursday’s protest against the December 7 election results.
The 26 protesters were granted bail in the sum of GH¢10,000 with one surety each.
Lawyer for the protesters Francis Xavier Sosu, briefing the media on what transpired in court, said the protesters were charged with failure to notify police and unlawful assembly.
They pleaded not guilty to both charges.
The 26 were arrested by the police for unlawfully demonstrating at the headquarters of the Electoral Commission (EC) on Thursday, December 17.
They massed up on the streets of the EC to protest the election results declared in favour of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
The supporters want the Chairperson of the EC, Jean Mensa, to overturn the results and declare them in favour of John Mahama.
They clashed with the police who managed to disperse them in the end.
The 26 include 15 males and 11 females. The case has been adjourned to Monday, January 25, 2021.
