An abandoned galamsey pit at Amaadaa near Nkrumah Nkwanta in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region has claimed the life of a 23-year-old man, Abu Ibrahim.
Abandoned galamsey pits over the years have trapped many people and taken lives in the area, according to report.
The assembly man for Nkrumah Nkwanta electoral area, Martin Prempeh narrating the unfortunate incident to Abusua FM’s Osei Kwadwo said the deceased with one other friend went to site to work when his barrel fell in the pit and in attempt of getting it back, slipped off into the pit and got drowned.
He added that the body has since not been retrieved from the pit since the incident happened late Monday April 23, 2018 evening and the residents consider Tuesdays as days for the ‘gods’ in the community.
He added that they can visit the scene when the day-break for the retrieval of the body after a ritual is performed.
“I heard the sad incident around 6pm yesterday but we couldn’t retrieve the body when we went to the scene because it was late. We have informed the Police and Traditional Authorities but because we consider today as a bad day, we have to wait for the traditional leaders to finish performing some rituals to pave way for us to go there to retrieve the body,” he said.
