The Ashanti Regional coordinating council on Tuesday honoured three schools for faring creditably in the maiden Independence Day breast cancer quiz competition.
The maiden event was championed by the Ashanti regional minister Simon Osei- Mensah in collaboration with renowned breast cancer advocacy NGO, Breast Care International and the Peace and Love Hospital.
The event which is expected to be an annual feature in independence day celebrations in the Ashanti region, is to create awareness of breast cancers among the youth especially students in Senior High Schools.
The T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School came first receiving a desk top computer the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Senior High School came second taking a Public address system with the third school Kumasi girls Senior High School awarded with a 40 inch television.
Addressing the ceremony, the Ashanti Regional minister, Simon Osei-Mensah described the initiative as laudable and progressive in ending needless deaths from cancers in Ghana.
The initiative comes as Kumasi has been selected by the Union for International Cancer Control on Anti-cancer Initiative as the first cancer city in Africa and the fourth around the world.
Founder and Executive Director of Breast Care International and the Peace and Love hospital Dr Beatrice Wiafe Addai requested that the advocacy goes beyond breast cancer to cover other cancers and non communicable diseases.
“Subsequently it is going to be organised for all cancers and non communicable diseases. We thank the honourable Regional Minister for this ingenuity in bringing the minds of everybody to breast cancers and all other cancers and we hope that in subsequent years, the schools will be more with more cancers featured in the competition,” she said.
