A total of Seventy-two (72) contingents made up of six security personnel most Police officers and sixty -six (66) pupils fainted at the independence day parade held at Koforidua Jackson Park in the Eastern region.
All victims were treated and discharged by the emergence team of red cross and Ambulance Service accept one who was rushed to the hospital for further treatment.
The Eastern Regional Manager of Red Cross Society of Ghana, Theophilus Tackie attributed the high number of casualties to fatigue caused by the long hours of standing under the scorching sun and the fact that most of the School pupils didn’t eat.
“This time round we had about 72 casualties who collapsed, about 66 of them were youth from primary to JHS, and then the rest are from the Senior Men” he said.
About 20 Basic Schools both Public and Private including Koforidua School for the Deaf, 9 Senior High Schools, 8 cadets contingents and 260 Security contingents took part in the Independence Day Parade.
The colourful ceremony also had display of choreography and Taekwando.
Trooping of the band for the first time was done by students instead of the Security personnel.
Present at the ceremony were Members of Parliament for New Juaben North and South, Nana Adjei Boateng and Dr. Mark Asibe Yeboah respectively.
Also in attendance are traditional rulers, clergy, politician among others.
The Eastern Regional Minister Eric Kwakye Darfuor in a speech read on behalf of the President Akufo-Addo assured Ghanaians of government’s commitment to build a solid economy to avoid being dependent on foreign aid.
