Free SHS: Cancel Buffer Stock Contract -Yamin tells Gov’t

Former Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister Joseph Yamin has called on government to cancel the contract of the Ghana National Food Buffer Stock Company under the Free SHS programme following the unwholesome flour distributed to some Senior High Schools in the Ashanti region.

Some SHSs have begun complaining of a sour taste from meals prepared from the said flour which was supplied to the schools.

Some Matrons who spoke to Abusua FM’s Osei Kwadwo on condition of anonymity blamed the situation on the challenges  associated with the running of the Free Senior High School programme.

They appealed to government to change the product and also resolve the late and inadequate supply of food stuff for the students.

National Food Buffer Stock Company has ordered for the withdrawal of unwholesome flour distributed to some Senior High Schools in the Ashanti region.

Mr Yamin speaking in an interview with Abusua News said some of the heads in the various schools couldn’t reject the unwholesome flour distributed to them to cook foods for the students because they have no option.

According to Yamin, if Headmasters and headmistresses of the various schools were given the opportunity to negotiate with suppliers and buy their own food stock and other supplies, they obviously could bargain better foods for the students.

“If not Abusua News investigations, I wouldn’t know that some expired rice have also been distributed to some schools. Expired foods distributing to some schools can affect students in those schools if government fails to put proper measures in place. Headmasters of the various schools must be given the opportunity to negotiate with suppliers and buy their own food stock and other supplies,” he suggested.
