Attack on Kumasi office: Really worrying – Daily Guide Editor

The Editor of the Daily Guide newspaper Alhaji AR Gomda has stated that its really worrying the attack on their Kumasi office.

Some members of Kumasi Youth Association (KUYA) this morning stormed and ransacked the office in Fanti New Town after they wrote a story on a banking case in the UK involving the  Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II arguing that Daily Guide’s publication about the king was intended to defame the king.

He wondered why the group invaded the office saying the headline was just okay.

“It is worrying really. I don’t see why this kind of thing should happen. We just did an innocuous story, very careful about the subject we were dealing with. The story was innocuous. The headline was okay. I don’t know why they would behave this way.

“The development which came after the main story was also positive for Asanteman and the Asantehene. I don’t know why they have gone on rampage and gone to lock up our office. It is disturbing really,” he told Francis Abban on Morning Starr.

Background:

A staff of the International Bank Mark Arthur was dismissed after it was reported that the Asantehene, summoned him to his multimillion-pound residence in Henley-on-Thames and handed him a bag containing almost £200,000 in sterling as well as $200,000 in US currency for saving at the bank.

The aggrieved banker, from New Barnet, Hertfordshire, a dual citizen of the UK and Ghana, drove to his own home with the cash and then took it in an Uber taxi to the bank’s City offices for deposit in the king’s account, he told an employment tribunal.

Mr Arthur after he was sacked in a statement said.“Mr Arthur has consistently confirmed in evidence that at no time did he suspect that the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, did anything wrong’.
