The Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service has revealed that cases of unnatural carnal knowledge against juveniles has increased astronomically in the Eastern region this year.
Many children have reportedly been abused sexually through unnatural manner by the perpetrators.
According to statistics available from Eastern regional Commanding Officer of DOVVSU, DSP Eunice Annor, cases of unnatural canal knowledge increased from 2 in 2015 to 22 in 2016 within the third quarter of the years under review.
Even though according to DOVVSU, there is 17.5% decline in crime against juveniles in the region with 741 reported cases of crime against juveniles from January to September this year.
Juxtaposing that with 899 cases recorded in 2015 during the same period, DOVVSU is worried over the increase in cases of unnatural carnal knowledge due to its impact on the health of the victims.
Under the CRIMINAL OFFENCES ACT – 1960 (ACT 29) Section – 104 – stipulates that, Unnatural Carnal Knowledge (1) Whoever has unnatural carnal knowledge- “(a) of any person of the age of sixteen years or over without his consent shall be guilty of a first degree felony and shall be liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term of not less than five years and not more than twenty-five years; or (b) of any person of sixteen years or over with his consent is guilty of a misdemeanour; or (c) of any animal is guilty of a misdemeanour”

Meanwhile, the region recorded Four hundred and fourteen(414) teenage girls in Basic Schools in 26 districts of the Eastern who were impregnated in the last two academics years, according to the Girl Child Education Unit of the Ghana Education Service.
Out of the total number, 229 got pregnant in 2014/2015 academic year whiles 185 girls were impregnated in 2015/2016 academic year.
In 2015/2016 academic year, only 50 of these pregnant pupils took part in the Basic Education Certificate Examination.
