The Ashanti regional Director of National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) Samuel Asiamah has admonished commercial and private commuters to wear their seat belts even if its dirty and will stain their clothes.
He added that the seat belts are not fixed there just for the sake of it but to help prevent serious injuries when accidents occur.
According to him, it is important to wear seat belts to be stucked in the vehicle when there is an accident than to be thrown out onto the street for an incoming vehicle to run over them.
He wondered why some commuters especially ‘trotro’ drivers claim they appear immature when they wear the seat belts.
Speaking on Ultimate Breakfast Show hosted by Lantam Papanko, Mr Asiamah dispelled claims that the seat belts are rigid and makes drivers uncomfortable.
He said the seat belt is designed purposely to save lives and not something to be ignored when driving or sitting in vehicles.
Mr Asiamah bemoaned that four out of ten drivers use seat belts in the region.
‘Its a bad misconception for drivers to say the seat belts make them uncomfortable, and its not so important to wear it when driving within town, the seat belt is something that will mitigate or reduce the injuries you are supposed to get when you are involved in an accident.
The manufacturer put in the seat belt there for a reason, some people give excuses that my seat belt is dirty, it will make my clothes dirty, but lets do the cost benefit, what happens if you had put on your seat belt, what value can you put on that cost saving the seat belt would have given you as comparing it to you saying the belt is uncomfortable, other people say it makes them look immature, am a profession driver why do I need a seat belt, I have been driving for twenty years nothing has happened. But its there to save you, because you are not the only one there, there could be a drunk driver,’ he said.
The Ashanti regional NRSC Director advised commuters and pedestrians to observe road rules to help save lives ahead of the Christmas.
He indicated that majority of the road crashes could be avoided if there is reduction in speeding, wrong overtaking and conscious effort in wearing of seat belts.
‘We all need as a people be mindful about how we drive, walk and sit in vehicles. If you a driver you will use the road at one point, we need to communicate on our roads, drivers behave as if they are the only people on the road. Let’s find the solutions to the problems, people are always in a hurry to overtake others, speeding should be minimised,’ he advised.
He called on motor cyclists to obey traffic regulations.
