Alhaji Ayanaa Yakubu, a 65-year-old man who walked from Kumasi to Accra to commemorate President John Dramani Mahama's inauguration on January 7, has been rewarded with a brand-new Renault car, an undisclosed cash amount, and shopping vouchers valued at GH¢5,000.
The reward was facilitated by an anonymous philanthropist who sought to recognise Alhaji Ayanaa’s extraordinary gesture of dedication. Renowned broadcaster and showbiz personality Kofi Okyere Darko (KOD) presented the gifts during a ceremony, capturing the moment in a video shared on his Instagram page. The footage shows an emotional Alhaji Ayanaa receiving the car keys and stepping into his new vehicle.
Alhaji Ayanaa’s remarkable efforts are not new; he first gained national attention in 1997 for walking significant distances to celebrate the second-term inauguration of the late President Jerry John Rawlings. In 1999, he further demonstrated his commitment to community initiatives by organising a 16-kilometre peace and health walk in Tamale to promote unity and well-being.
KOD, reflecting on the occasion, expressed gratitude for being part of the event. Sharing the story on social media, he wrote:
This afternoon, I had the honour of presenting Mr. Yakubu—a gentleman who walked all the way from Kumasi to congratulate H.E. President Mahama on his victory in the last elections—with a brand-new Renault car, an undisclosed amount of money, and shopping vouchers worth GH¢5,000 from Nineteen57.
Motivation for future walks
Alhaji Ayaana’s gift could be a motivation for young and old people who would like to take up such a top challenge. Not for honouring President Biden but for national courses and a protest for rights and justice.
