The Ghana Police Service successfully intercepted an attempted gold robbery at the Newmont Mining site in Ntotroso, Ahafo Region. According to the Police, the suspects attempted to breach the facility's security on the night of Wednesday, 8 January 2025, to carry out the robbery.
In a statement dated 9 January, the Director of Public Affairs, ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, disclosed that during an operation to contain the situation, the Police confronted the suspects, resulting in casualties. The statement reads:
During the operation to contain the situation, the Police confronted the suspects, leading to the death of three persons and injuries to four others.
The Inspector-General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, reportedly coordinated efforts with the Regional Police team and engaged community leaders and youth throughout the night to stabilise the situation.
The statement added:
.There have been no reprisal attacks or escalation of the situation in the community.
The Police further revealed that a special investigation team from Accra has been deployed to the area to investigate the incident, while a reinforcement team has been sent to maintain peace and security.
Additionally, the statement confirmed that the deceased individuals, being Muslims, would be buried today in line with Islamic customs noting:
The due process of the law is being followed for the bodies to be released to their families for burial later today.
Calm has since been restored in the area, with the Ghana Police Service assuring the public that they will continue to monitor the situation to ensure law and order prevail.
