President John Dramani Mahama has, effective today, 8th January 2025, revoked the appointments of Chief Executives of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDCEs) and assembly members appointed by the former Akufo-Addo administration.
The decision aligns with the provisions of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), as amended by the Local Governance (Amendment) Act, 2017 (Act 940).
In a letter addressed to the Chief Director of the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, Secretary to the President, Dr Callistus Mahama, stated:
In the interim, the respective Coordinating Directors of the various MMDAs are directed to assume responsibility as acting Chief Executives until substantive appointments are duly made.
The directive forms part of the President’s first actions in office as the 6th President of the Fourth Republic of Ghana.
His Excellency John Dramani Mahama was officially sworn in as President of the Republic of Ghana for the next four years during a presidential inauguration ceremony held at the Black Star Square in Accra on Tuesday, 7th January 2025.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including former Presidents Nana Akufo-Addo and John Agyekum Kufuor, former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, Members of Parliament, and thousands of Ghanaians.
Delivering his acceptance speech, President Mahama expressed profound gratitude to voters for their overwhelming endorsement and promised to steer the country towards economic transformation.
He reaffirmed his commitment to addressing the nation’s challenges with humility and urged all citizens to eschew pessimism and prioritise the national interest.
President of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, also reiterated his pledge to improve the livelihoods of citizens and support the business community through the implementation of the much-touted 24-hour economy policy.
