The Kantamanto Fire Incident
On the morning of January 2, 2025, traders at Kantamanto Market were met with devastating news as a massive fire broke out, causing widespread destruction. The fire ravaged numerous shops in the Kantamanto Railways area, with flames continuing for hours despite the valiant efforts of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
The fire began around 1:00 am and quickly spread, prompting an urgent response from the GNFS. Initially, five fire tenders from various locations, including Makola, the Greater Accra Regional Headquarters, the National Headquarters, Flagstaff House, and Parliament House, were dispatched to combat the blaze.
As the fire intensified, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) was called upon to cut the power supply to the area, in order to reduce the risk of further accidents. To strengthen the firefighting efforts, three additional fire tenders from Circle, Trade Fair, and Dansoman were sent, bringing the total number of appliances to eight.
Despite the efforts, the fire continued to rage, and the GNFS called for further assistance. Two more fire tenders from Abelenkpe and Kasapreko arrived, raising the total number of appliances to ten. The situation prompted even more support, as fire tenders from the Tema Regional Headquarters and Madina were deployed, followed by one from the Legon Fire Station, bringing the total number of fire appliances to 13.
Firefighting Efforts and Continued Battle
By 6:00 am, after over five hours of intense firefighting, the flames were still burning, with fire crews working tirelessly to bring the situation under control. The GNFS, which provided live updates of their efforts, remained committed to containing the fire, though there had been no further updates for the past two hours as of the latest reports.
