President Nana Akufo-Addo has assured traders who lost their shops and livelihood in the devastating fire that engulfed the Kantamanto market in Central Accra on Thursday, January 2, 2024.
The president said he was deeply disturbed by the unfortunate incident and extended his sympathy to them.
Speaking in parliament today during his final State of the Nation Address, he noted that the government will put measures in place to offer the needed for these traders.
I want to put on record that I am deeply saddened by the devastating fire at the Kantamanto Market yesterday that has left many traders and their livelihoods in ruins. My thoughts and prayers are with those affected and I extend heartfelt sympathies to the hardworking traders who have lost their goods and investments.
Government stands with you and will work with relevant agencies to ascertain the causes of the fire and provide the needed support. As a nation, let us unite in compassion and solidarity to help those who have suffered losses. Together we can extend a helping hand to our fellow Ghanaians in need during during this challenging time.
He urged everyone in Ghana to unite in solidarity and help the impacted traders through this trying period.
The administration has promised to look into what caused the disaster and put policies in place to stop it from happening again.
At 1 am on Thursday, a fire broke in the vibrant Kantamanto market and despite the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) deploying about 13 fire tenders and fighting the fire for several hours, the market was reduced to ashes.
It was a chaotic and heartbreaking scene. Traders searched through the burned remnants of their stalls in the hopes of finding something valuable, as many of them had put their entire life savings into their companies.
