The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially confirmed that Senior High Schools (SHSs) will reopen on January 3, 2025, as per the 2024/25 academic calendar.
This confirmation follows concerns raised by the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) over unresolved financial issues that have affected the smooth running of schools.
In a press release issued on January 2, 2025, the GES reiterated that despite these financial challenges, the academic calendar will remain unchanged. According to Cassandra Twum Ampofo, Head of the Public Relations Unit at GES, students are still expected to report on January 3, 2025.
SHS students are expected to report back to school on January 3rd, 2025, while primary and Junior High Schools will reopen on January 8th, 2025.
However, the GES acknowledged the concerns raised by CHASS, which has been vocal about the financial struggles faced by many schools. In a statement released on December 31, 2024, CHASS called for a postponement of the reopening date due to outstanding debts related to food supplies and other operational expenses.
These issues have led to frustration among school heads, who fear that the lack of funding could disrupt the start of the academic year and negatively impact students' learning experiences.
Ms. Twum Ampofo assured the public that the GES is actively engaging with the Ministry of Education to address these concerns.
We are working closely with the Ministry to resolve these issues as soon as possible.
The GES also urged all stakeholders, including students, parents, and teachers, to prepare for the reopening as scheduled and remain optimistic about the resolution of the financial challenges.
This announcement ensures that the academic year will proceed as planned, despite the financial difficulties that have been highlighted in recent weeks.
