A bizarre case in Karnataka has left the internet purring with curiosity after a woman accused her husband of cruelty—not towards her, but in his unwavering devotion to their pet cat. The Bengaluru High Court judges weren’t impressed, calling the complaint frivolous and lacking any real evidence of harassment. Instead, the woman’s claims centred on her husband prioritising the feline over her, with heated arguments erupting whenever she brought up his cat-first attitude.
She even alleged the cat had scratched her multiple times, but her husband, seemingly unfazed, refused to take action. Justice M. Nagaprasanna wryly noted that the case lacked substance, leaving many to wonder if the real drama was all just feline mischief.
“The complaint is a narration of marriage and living together, but the crux of the allegation is founded upon the squabble regarding a pet cat that is in the house of the husband,” Justice Nagaprasanna said.
The allegation is that the husband takes care of the cat more than the wife.
“Whenever the wife has pointed out this, there is a dispute between the two, and abuses are hurled,” the Judge added while hearing the bizarre petition a week ago.
“That is what is narrated in most of the paragraphs of the complaint. Therefore, the issue is not about the demand for dowry or assault on demand of dowry or cruelty meted out by the husband. The issue is with regards to the pet cat and the cat attacking or scratching the wife several times.”
After considering the peculiar complaint, the Court dismissed further investigations against the husband and rebuked the woman for filing what it deemed a frivolous case.
“It is such frivolous cases that have clogged the criminal justice system today, and if the investigation is permitted in the case at hand, it would add one more case to the already clogged justice system,” the Court said.
The judges emphasised that such baseless petitions contribute to the backlog in the Indian justice system, diverting resources from more pressing legal matters.
