Franklin Cudjoe, the Founder of IMANI Africa, has alleged that the outgoing Akufo-Addo administration is plotting to remove the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, due to his role in ensuring the just-ended 2024 elections were free and fair.
In a Facebook post, Mr Cudjoe claimed that reliable intelligence indicates Dr Dampare is being targeted for standing against attempts to rig the elections.
We have very reliable intelligence that the current IGP is being harassed and threatened with removal from office by the Akufo-Addo administration before they leave office. His crime? For standing up for peaceful and transparent elections. For denying the government the opportunity to put in motion election rigging machinery, it had long planned for previous by-elections and the one they lost, he stated.
Mr Cudjoe further alleged that the Electoral Commission (EC), in collaboration with government elements, is pressuring election security services to support a re-collation of votes in nine constituencies. He suggested these efforts are part of a broader plan to overturn the election results in favour of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Now, though in connivance with the high-handed Electoral Commission, the government is forcing election security services to provide service for the re-collation of some nine constituencies elements of the government believe they won, he claimed.
He commended the Electoral Security Services for rejecting the alleged requests from the EC to manipulate the results, which had declared the National Democratic Congress (NDC) victorious.
Thankfully, the Electoral Security Services have flatly denied the EC its request to help rig the clear mandate that the NDC has been given, Mr Cudjoe noted, adding that such actions are a threat to Ghana’s democracy.
The IMANI Africa boss warned against any attempts to remove Dr Dampare and replace him with a puppet to aid the alleged election rigging scheme.
They are mistaken and should they dare remove the IGP and install their puppets to grant the rigging-minded and pliant EC to overturn the will of the people in the nine constituencies, they will be responsible for what happens to them, he cautioned.
Mr Cudjoe called on President-elect John Dramani Mahama, the NDC, and other Ghanaians to resist such moves and protect the integrity of the election results.
The allegations come amidst ongoing tensions following the 2024 elections, where the NDC secured victory, and John Dramani Mahama was declared President-elect. The NPP has yet to respond to the claims made by Franklin Cudjoe.
