The United States Embassy in Ghana has pledged to collaborate with the government and relevant institutions to facilitate the participation of Ghanaian fans at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Speaking at an American Spaces-hosted event themed: ‘Countdown to World Cup 26: FIFA World Cup, Benefits That Transcend Soccer to Propel Economies’, Chargé d’Affaires Mr. Rolf Olson highlighted the Embassy’s readiness to ensure that high visa demands from Ghanaian supporters are met, enabling fans to cheer on the Black Stars in the tournament.
“The Embassy is eager to collaborate with Washington to identify additional resources to meet the high visa demand from Ghanaians who want to support the Black Stars and enjoy the tournament,” Mr. Olson stated.
U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary for West Africa, Mr. Will Stevens, congratulated Ghana for qualifying, noting shared cultural and historical ties between the two nations and their past FIFA World Cup encounters. Ghana has faced the United States three times in World Cups, winning two matches in 2006 and 2010 and losing in 2014.
The event, which drew media practitioners and sports stakeholders, discussed the broader economic and social impacts of the World Cup. Former GFA Marketing Manager Benjamin Willie Graham emphasized the tournament’s influence beyond football, citing FIFA’s projection of six million visitors and an expected $8.9 billion in revenue, highlighting benefits such as tourism, job creation, global visibility, and infrastructure development.
Participating nations will earn $9 million at the group stages, with increasing amounts as teams progress, while host countries stand to gain indirectly from the global spotlight and economic activities.
