A day’s capacity-building workshop for 45 journalists on energy sector reporting, with emphasis on the use of social media and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance accuracy and professionalism was held in Tema on Wednesday.
Organised by Energy News Africa Limited, with support from the Tema Chapter of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), the one-day training was held on the theme: ‘Leveraging Social Media and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Accurate and Effective Energy Reporting: Trends, Tools and Best Practices.’
The workshop sought to improve participants’ understanding of emerging technologies shaping both the energy sector and modern newsrooms.
Resource persons took the journalists through practical sessions on the use of digital tools for research, data verification, storytelling and audience engagement.
In a presentation, Media and Digital Communications Specialist, Mr Charles Wundengba, underscored the growing role of social media and AI in strengthening newsroom efficiency.
He cautioned that although technology provides journalists with real-time access to information, it also increases the risk of misinformation, making verification indispensable.
Mr Wundengba demonstrated AI-powered tools for fact-checking, data analysis, content creation and multimedia reporting, urging journalists to adopt these innovations responsibly to enhance accuracy, transparency and public trust in energy reporting.
He further highlighted the need for journalists to understand the technicalities of the energy sector, noting that informed reporting is essential for shaping national discussions on electricity supply, renewable energy and energy governance.
Chairman of the GJA Tema Chapter, Mr Michael Dewornu, said the association was pleased to support initiatives that build the capacity of journalists in specialised fields such as energy, which plays a critical role in national development.
Managing Editor of Energy News Africa, Mr Michael Cregg Afful, stated that the programme formed part of broader efforts to promote quality journalism and strengthen public discourse on Ghana’s energy transition and policy direction.
Participants expressed satisfaction with the training, saying it had sharpened their digital reporting skills and deepened their knowledge of the energy sector.
Officials from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) and the Volta River Authority (VRA) also made presentations, sharing insights into key energy issues and underscoring the need for journalists to appreciate the technical aspects of the sector in order to ensure accurate reporting.
