UniMAC appoints Prof. Hammond as Rector for GIJ

 The University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC) has appointed Professor Christiana Hammond as the Rector of the Institute of Jour­nalism, formerly known as Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ).

Prof. Hammond, an Associate Professor in Intercultural Commu­nication and Pragmatics is the first female to head the country’s pre­miere journalism school established 65 years ago on October 16, 1959.

A press statement signed and issued by the UniMAC Vice Chan­cellor, Prof. Eric Opoku-Mensah, in Accra on Tuesday said Prof. Hammond brings a wealth of ex­perience and expertise in commu­nication studies to the role.

It said she had served the aca­demic community with distinction for several years with a proven track record of leadership and innovation, exemplifying the core values of UniMAC through her dedication to academic excellence, research, and student welfare.

It said her vision for higher education aligned seamlessly with the University’s commitment to fostering a dynamic learning envi­ronment that prepares students for success in the modern world.

“In her new capacity, Prof. Ham­mond will assume responsibility for guiding the Institute of Journalism through its ongoing pursuit of academic excellence, fostering col­laboration among faculty, staff, and students, and advancing the

University’s mission of becom­ing a globally recognised centre for excellence in the training of media, arts and communication profes­sionals,” it added.

The statement said the Universi­ty’s Governing Council and the en­tire UniMAC community extended their heartfelt congratulations to Prof. Christiana Hammond on her appointment.

“We are confident that under her capable leadership, UniMAC will continue to thrive and uphold its rightful reputation,” the statement added.

Prof. Christiana Hammond is an accomplished scholar in Intercul­tural Communication and Prag­matics with numerous publications in esteemed academic networks. Her research focuses on identity studies, pragmatics, and intercultur­al communication.

She has presented scholarly papers at local and international conferences and serves as a gender advocate and public speaker. Prof. Hammond has also worked on projects sponsored by UNESCO and the Ministry of Education, Ghana.

Currently, she is part of a team working on the C40 Cities Finance Facility project, focusing on Solid Waste Source Separation and Com­posting for Behavioural Change in Accra.

Prof. Hammond holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree in Communication Studies and has attended several international con­ferences and workshops.
