President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday lit the Perpetual Flame in memory of 20 police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, as the Ghana Police Service marked the 2025 Police Memorial Day in Accra.
The solemn ceremony, held at the National Police Training School in Tesano, brought together the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno, representatives of traditional authorities, and bereaved families of the fallen officers. President Mahama, the IGP, and other dignitaries laid wreaths in honour of the departed men and women who paid the ultimate price while serving the nation.
Statistics from the Ghana Police Service indicate that the majority of the officers died through road traffic accidents during official operations. One officer drowned in a mining pit, another died in a friendly fire incident, one collapsed while on duty, and others were shot and killed by armed robbers. The ceremony served as a moment of reflection and appreciation for the dedication and sacrifice of police personnel who continue to risk their lives to ensure peace and security across the country.
