The Right to Information Commission (RTIC) has formally requested a response from the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) regarding its refusal to release information on alleged tax evasion and money laundering cases involving certain companies.
This follows a petition filed by Joseph Bediako, Convener of the Movement for Truth and Accountability, who accused the FIC of failing to provide requested details.
Joseph Bediako initially sought information in December 2024, followed by a reminder in January 2025.
After receiving no response, he escalated the matter to the RTIC.
The requested information includes the status of investigations initiated since 2020, any findings or conclusions, and any other relevant details.
Citing Sections 43(2)(b) and 70 of the Right to Information Act, 2019 (Act 989), Yaw Sarpong Boateng, Executive Secretary of RTIC, has directed the FIC to justify its refusal and provide the requested details within seven days.
The Commission emphasised that public institutions must assist in investigations and warned that failure to comply would not hinder its review process.
In a related development, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has responded to Joseph Bediako’s request, providing data on audits, penalties and referrals to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
The figures indicate that from 2021 to 2024, a total of 548 importers were audited, leading to assessed liabilities exceeding GH¢1 billion.
Additionally, 537 cases were referred to EOCO for further action.
Measures have been introduced to prevent infractions, including stricter post-clearance audits, improved coordination between regulatory bodies, and enhanced monitoring of fund transfers.
The GRA also outlined penalties imposed on importers who under declared customs values.
The FIC’s response remains pending, and the RTIC has advised all parties to refrain from making prejudicial public statements while investigations continue.
