Phase II Tema Motorway Project Opened

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has inaugurated phase two of the Tema Motorway Interchange.

The inauguration, which occurred on Monday, December 2, 2024 is the third interchange in one month to be opened.

On November 19, 2024 he opened the Flowerpot flyover, and the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange was officially inaugurated on November 29, 2024.

“Today, on 2nd December, 2024 we gather here to inaugurate yet another landmark project, the Tema Motorway Interchange, another symbol of our nation’s progress and an enduring legacy of the Akufo-Addo government’s commitment to improving the lives of Ghanaians,” the President said at the ceremony held in Tema yesterday.

He continued that “This project is a testament to the power of vision, determination and collaboration. It represents our unfailing dedication to addressing the long-standing challenges of mobility, economic growth and regional integration.”

PROJECT

Phase one of the Tema Motorway Interchange Project began in 2020 and was followed by phase two.

In his address, President Akufo-Addo indicated that the completion of phase two of the project was a defining moment in Ghana’s infrastructure narrative.

He was sure the project would enhance traffic flow to and from the Tema Harbour. He also said that phase two is part of a broader vision to create a Ghana that is connected, inclusive and globally competitive.

The president highlighted the partnership between Ghana and Japan, which funded the project through a grant aid.

This support from the government and people of Japan, facilitated by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the president said, reflects the strong bond of friendship and mutual respect between the two nations.

WORK TIRELESSLY

The president told the gathering that from the Pokuase interchange to the Tamale interchange, “we have worked tirelessly to open up our country, reduce disparities, and empower communities. Our commitment extends beyond roads.”

The outgoing president of Ghana remarked that his government was investing significantly in other critical sectors, including railways, healthcare, and education. These investments, he explained, are laying the foundation for a resilient, economically vibrant, and inclusive Ghana.

ELECTION

Giving the work undertaken by his government, he urged Ghanaians to vote for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to succeed him and to continue his good works.

According to him, the determination, vision and experience of the presidential candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party, Dr. Bawumia, and his running mate Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, would ensure the continuation of the transformative projects.

CAUTION

The president ended his address by urging motorists to exercise caution and observe road safety regulations, as well as prioritise the safety of all road users.

“This interchange is a gift to us all, and we must use it responsibly to ensure its longevity,” he concluded.

JICA

The Country Director, JICA Ghana Office, Ms. Suzuki Momoko, said that the Japanese government, through JICA, provided a grant amount of 3,656,000,000 Japanese Yen, equivalent to about US$33 million to the government of Ghana.

She said the project also forms part of the implementation of the West Africa Corridor Development Growth Ring, while the Greek Master Plan, which enhances connectivity among countries.

Japan has been advocating the quality infrastructure and I’m happy about today’s significant infrastructure exhibit.
