The Association of Passengers Ghana is concerned about the lack of clear communication from transport operators regarding proposed increases in transport fares across the country.
The Association’s convener, Afia Kwarteng Asamani, emphasised the need for clear communication to avoid confusion and uphold the interests of both commuters and drivers. The Association called for swift action by engaging members on approved fares and ensuring transparent communication with the public.
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council issued joint advisory urging commuters to refrain from paying new fares that have not been officially approved.
This advisory comes in response to the announcement made by the Transport Operators Union and the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana, regarding a proposed 30% increase in transport fares, set to take effect on Saturday, April 13. In their joint press release, the GPRTU and the GRTCC attributed the decision to raise fares to the government’s perceived failure to address lingering grievances within the transport sector adequately.
The Association of Passengers Ghana’s discontent over the lack of transparent communication from transport operators regarding fare adjustments underscores the need for clarity and transparency in such matters.
This ambiguity has led to confusion among commuters and drivers alike, potentially escalating tensions and creating an unfavorable situation for all involved.
It is crucial to address this issue promptly and decisively. Failure to do so could exacerbate misunderstandings and further strain the already challenging circumstances faced by both commuters and transport operators.
The Chronicle sees as commendable the call by the Association of Passengers Ghana for swift action from transport operators to engage their members and ensure transparent communication with the public is commendable. Clear and accurate information regarding approved fare adjustments is essential to prevent misunderstandings and foster a harmonious relationship between passengers and transport providers.
While acknowledging the recent increases in fuel prices and other factors necessitating fare adjustments, it is paramount that the approved fares are explicitly stated and widely disseminated. Whether the increase is 20% or 30%, clarity in communication is key to averting confusion and promoting understanding among all stakeholders.
The recent joint advisory issued by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), urging commuters to refrain from paying unapproved fares is a step in the right direction. This advisory underscores the importance of adherence to established procedures and official approvals in implementing fare adjustments.
However, the confusion and disagreement that have arisen following the announcement of a proposed 30% fare increase indicate the urgent need for a more coordinated and transparent approach.
The Ministry of Transport, GPRTU, GRTCC and other relevant bodies must work together to ensure that approved fares are communicated clearly and uniformly to all stakeholders to avoid further confusion.
