Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has outlined plans to deploy selected police officers to the 2026 World Cup as part of a broader strategy to strengthen sports security and enhance event management expertise in Ghana.
Adams revealed that discussions have already taken place with Inspector General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno over the creation of a dedicated sports policing unit.
The proposed initiative aims to improve crowd control, curb hooliganism and professionalise matchday security operations across the country.
Under the proposal, a small delegation of officers would attend the tournament to observe international best practices in stadium security, fan engagement and large-scale event coordination.
The Minister indicated that the programme would be financed through the Ghana Sports Fund, subject to the availability of resources.
Speaking to Adom FM, Adams stressed that the World Cup presents more than just a football spectacle.
“It is not about chasing the ball for 90 minutes; we see it as an opportunity to learn. We would like to send a few people to study aspects of culture such as fan mobilization and support. I have discussed with the IGP that we need to send personnel because we want to form a police unit for sports.
“So we want to send some police officers to the World Cup to observe crowd control in action and understand how it is done. We want to strengthen the security of the game, if my fundraising [sports fund] works well,” he said.
