Sudan is brimming with confidence ahead of their historic 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Round of 16 clash against Senegal.
Head coach Kwesi Appiah, who guided the team to the knockout stages for the first time since 2012, has set an ambitious target of winning the entire tournament.
"Sudan deserves to go far in the AFCON, and our ultimate goal remains to chase for the AFCON title," Appiah stated. Acknowledging the challenge, he added, "We have respect for Senegal, they are a big footballing country in Africa, they are the former champions, but we are ready".
Sudan's journey to the last 16 has been remarkable, achieved despite the backdrop of civil war at home which forced them to play all "home" matches on neutral ground.
They secured their spot as one of the best third-placed teams in Group E, thanks to a vital 1-0 victory over Equatorial Guinea â only their second AFCON win since 1970 â and results elsewhere.
This AFCON success follows a strong showing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, where Sudan, under Appiah, initially topped Group B ahead of Senegal and DR Congo. Their campaign included a resilient 0-0 draw against Senegal in March 2025.
Despite recent setbacks in the qualifiers, including a 2-0 loss to Senegal in September 2025, the team's overall progress has provided a significant source of pride and a "smile on Sudanese faces" during a difficult time for the nation.
